What Do I Wear to a Photoshoot?
Is it time to update your family photos? Does the last one include all the members of your family? Maybe some weren’t born yet? Or the family has grown in other ways?
Now that I have convinced you to book your next shoot, what do you wear? There are a few ways you can go about deciding.
The first is to just wear whatever you want. I would stay away from stained clothing or unintentional holes, but wearing what you are comfortable with will help you relax a little during the photo shoot. Keeping in mind the location of your photo shoot should come into play here, there are no rules!
Another school of thought is to wear similar colors. A family opted to wear blue shirts and jeans to look cohesive. While all wearing the same color, you can still personalize each individual’s style with prints, shades of color, and accessories. In the second shoot I did, (pictured here) they opted for shades of green in their clothing. (We love forever customers!)
You can have shirts made or hats that tie everyone together. Whether it includes the family name, nicknames, or some other design, this can be similar to having shirts for a joint vacation. You can take photos with these themed items and then have an option to change into another shirt or take the hat off to have some un-themed photos as well. A little fun mixed in with a little formal. Everyone will find a style they will love and hopefully a photo too!
Lastly, you can just choose one theme to go with. Flannel is an option for a woodsy or holiday shoot that can have different looks but still be tied together. Don’t forget your pet! Make sure they are included when deciding what you want the theme to be.
Honestly, no matter what choose keep these things in mind:
1) Don’t blend into the background of your location. If you are going to be in a photographer’s studio, ask them if you can see the backdrops that you are able to choose from or what their setup is like. That way if it is a white background, you will not blend in with a white shirt.
2) Wear what is comfortable. If something is too tight, or you feel awkward, it will be harder to relax in your photos. The more comfortable you are and it will show in your photos. I love to get to know my clients ahead of time, get a feel for their style, and try and answer questions to help relieve any stress or pressure
3) You can check with your photographer to see if they will allow for outfit changes during your session. This way if you are in between outfits, you can have a little bit of both
As always, have fun with your photo shoot. You will be able to treasure these for a lifetime so you want them to be something you LOVE!
